THE BASICS WHEN YOU START; as a beginner or as an old hand in a new season.  Print it out and keep in your scorecard holder or in a special little 'golf lessons' notebook.


Good golfers never rush up to a shot and bash away madly,  They think, plan and do, in a little routine.

G = GRIP; you shake hands with your club  Hands together 'in one piece'.

A = AIM; it helps to hit the ball where you want it to go!
    come from behind; look at ball -----> target [put a club down parallel to check]

S = STANCE; put the club head down behind the ball, then step to the left and step to the right  - a   little bigger step with your right foot.

P = POSTURE [how you stand.]

Remember the little poem
        Stand to attention
        Stand at ease
        Stick your butt out
        And flex your knees.

Just as if you were  going to dive into a pool or a tiger ready to pounce.  Tip for parents;  Grab the hip pockets of a pair of jeans and just ‘hitch’ them a little; Simple and perfect for posture! [think sitting on the edge of a bar stool and you have got it]  Arms should hang naturally;  back straight not curved;  any doubts go to 'set up in 5 easy stages.'

SET UP RIGHT  --- AND YOU ARE READY TO GO.  REMEMBER YOU CANNOT SEE YOURSELF  SO GET SOMEONE TO CHECK, USE A CLUB OR A MIRROR!  THEN ALL YOU DO IS SWING YOUR ARMS BACK AS WIDE AS YOU CAN AND SWING THEM BACK.  YOUR RIGHT ARM AND HANDS SHOULD BE RELAXED - NEVER RIGID.  THE BALL IS NOT GOING TO MOVE SO JUST SWING YOUR ARMS [the club will come along too!] AS SMOOTHLY AND AS RELAXED AS YOU CAN.  THE MORE YOU BASH - THE WORSE THE SHOT!!!

SWING PRACTICE -- 20 TIMES A DAY FOR ‘MUSCLE MEMORY’

Hold a club out like a baseball bat and swing it to the right letting your right elbow tuck in; then swing it right back round to the left tucking in your left elbow.  Your mum or dad will see you are turning and shifting your weight PERFECTLY but you have not thought about anything technical. You will just have proved that golf ie EASY  and NATURAL!!

REMEMBER WE PLAY A LOT IN THE WIND.  JUST CHECK EVERY SO OFTEN YOUR WEIGHT IS ON THE BALLS OF YOUR FEET [NOT TOES OR HEELS] AND YOU ARE NOT LEANING ON TO YOUR LEFT SIDE.  GET INTO THE HABIT OF ‘LOOKING AT THE BACK OF THE BALL’  AFTER ALL, THIS IS WHERE YOU WANT TO HIT IT!
