 BEUNSTON'S 'DADS' ARMY.AT THE PRIZE-GIVING

At sometime in all golfers' lives, the spring in the step becomes a little rustier.  The young guns smashing balls more than 250 yards down the fairways, [or at least just smashing balls horrendous distances] polo shirts flying up to their shoulder blades, whippet like turns, etc., reminds us that we cannot stay teenagers forever!  Luckily, electric caddy cars, buggies and some ibuprofen keep our golfing lives going.  A shortened swing, an older head, experience are all good news - but an inspired thought from Secretary Lynda to introduce a 'Dads' Army' category - rather than the usual 'gerries'  informal groups - has increased our Club membership as any number of these sprightly gentlemen now compete every Monday in a special 9 hole calendar of events - for an astonishing number of prizes.   It is a little like stepping back into the etiquette, manners, even gallantry, I experienced as a Junior.  Although it must be said all gallantry went out the window when they trounced the Ladies in a match last summer!

Alex Girvan has agreed to be the new Clark Kent, and if spotted with his camera, you may well feature here in reports of any wondrous feats out on the course..

Last year's prize giving table, laden with goodies!

Ross McGarva won the June Medal with a net 33 from Andy Stewart's net 36.  Ross probably has kept modestly quiet about the tremendous progress his two nieces are making in the County Girls competitions.  He should be well proud of them and perhaps has become inspired by their success as they hover around the fringes of the senior squad.

  • After thinking I would not want to play in the nasty weather of Monday I was impressed by the mens' scores and the fact so many ventured out.   Of course when one is 20 years old It seemed amazing that anyone over 30 is able to play.  Situations change drastically!  I am not a gym freak and do not expect to see Dads army turn up next week in lycra, but this is a good exercise for increasing or maintaining flexibilty and can be done without any special gear, getup or gym.  A few minutes every other day works wonders even on my arthriticky spine!

Rating: Easy The aim of this exercise is to improve the range of your trunk (or torso) rotation. It will also help improve the flexibility in your left shoulder.

    Instructions:

  • Start by placing your palms on a wall as shown in the picture. Aim to have your arms approximately parallel to the ground.
  • Then step your feet around to the left until you feel a stretch in the middle of your back and in the back of your left shoulder.
  • Hold this position until the stretch ‘gives’ a little and then increase your turn slightly.
  • As a warm up stretch, hold the position for 20-30 seconds but if you are working on improving your flexibility, hold the position for 60 seconds or so.
  • Make sure!
  • You don’t experience any shoulder, neck or low back pain
  • Progression:
  • You can increase the stretch by gently leaning to the left or by gently pushing your hands into the wall.

As someone who thinks of the word 'gym' and 'torture' at the same time, this is another little exercise which looks fun as well as effective.

Pinch a grandson's footie ball and give it a go.
